 DCA Spotlights LA Treasures
Model Program Provides Unique Service to Folk Arts Community

Home to many world traditions and many cultural bearers who strive to keep their cultures vibrant, Los Angeles is proud of its multicultural heritage.  DCA long wanted to serve this diverse folk arts community but recognized that the majority of folk and traditional artists are not associated with non-profit organizations and often have little experience applying for and receiving grant monies.  We have creatively designed an awards program which serves as a national model of promoting individual traditional artists.  DCA proudly introduces the Elaine Weissman LA Treasures Awards.

Named after the late Elaine Weissman, a respected leader in the national folk art world, LA Treasures is a partnership program between DCA and the California Traditional Music Society that connects individual master artists with opportunities to present their traditional arts.  These master artists include musicians, dancers, martial artists, storytellers, and artisans who have perfected traditional forms and continually inspire others to continue their cultural traditions.

LA Treasures is designed to benefit artists and general audiences and is managed through DCA’s Cultural Grants Program, which offers a one-page, streamlined application, reviewed monthly, and $1,000.00 individual awards to support the production of two public presentations.  DCA’s unique award program serves nearly 40 recipients and approximately 40,000 audience members annually.

For more information about the program, or to nominate potential candidates for the award, or to apply for an award, please call Lisa Richardson at 818.817.0094 or lisar@ctmsfolkmusic.org
