DCA's Watts Towers Arts Center Presents Photo-documentary
Gail Brown's From Where I'm Standing, 2007

Watts Towers Arts Center is proud to present an exhibition of Gail Brown’s From Where I’m Standing, 2007. Working with teens and preteens in Watts and Eagle Rock, Ms. Brown’s photo-documentary presents a riveting, insider’s view of the experiences and perceptions of young people growing up in two Los Angeles communities. The participants’ combined handwritten texts and photographs weave an intricate and intimate tapestry, and present difficult truths with honesty and compassion.

From Where I’m Standing, 2007 will be on display through July 29th, 2007 at Watts Towers Arts Center.
Watts Towers Arts Center is located next to the world-famous sculpture towers built by Simon Rodia, near the intersection of 107th Street and Graham Boulevard in Los Angeles.

This exhibition is made possible in part by a grant from DCA, with additional support from Eagle Rock Jr./ Sr. High School and the Watts Towers Arts Center.

DCA's Summer Art Classes Begin

Take a break and take a class!

A groundbreaking partnership between local government, music providers, and parents, Music LA is DCA's music education program that coordinates resources to provide quality music instruction for young people throughout the City of Los Angeles.

Music LA gives children and teens a summer of music training in a challenging and creative environment where learning, focus, and discipline are cultivated. It provides professional music education programming in areas of the City where few or no music education programs exist.

Music LA creates points of access between young people, creative communities, and local government to support musicians and arts organizations as music education providers.

Please click here to view the complete list of Music LA Summer 2007 sites.  And don't forget to tell your family and friends that students can pre-register by contacting a site near you!

Call for Submissions
Dia de los Muertos: Honoring the Dead Across Cultures

Rituals to memorialize and honor the dead exist among cultures throughout the world.

One such ritual, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, traces its history to the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. Dia de los Muertos is a national holiday in Mexico and is observed in numerous countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America as well as the United States, parts of Europe, and the Philippines. Similarly-themed celebrations to venerate the dead including Japan’s Bon festival, Korea’s Chuseok, China’s Qingming and a variety of ceremonies in Africa pay tribute to departed ancestors, albeit at different times of the year.

In keeping with this multicultural celebration, El Pueblo Historical Monument will present in the Pico House Gallery from October 18 to November 19, 2007, Dia de los Muertos: Honoring the Dead Across Cultures. Artists are asked to submit for consideration two and three-dimensional work (including ofrendas/altars) that explores Dia de los Muertos and other rituals from around the world honoring the departed.

Submissions should be sent to Mariann Gatto, Curator, El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, 125 Paseo de la Plaza, Suite 400, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Submissions will be accepted in the following formats:

• CD containing digital images, i.e. jpeg format
• Photographic prints
• Slides

Absolutely no email (electronic) submissions will be accepted. Do not mail or drop off original work for consideration. All submissions must be received by August 15, 2007. A maximum of four (4) submissions from each artist will be considered. All submissions must be original work done by the artist. The following information must accompany the submission: artist’s first and last name, telephone number, email address and website (if available), title of work, year executed, media, dimensions and price (if for sale). For more information, please call 213.485.8432 or email mariann.gatto@lacity.org.

POW WOW

The Southern California Indian Center, Inc (SCIC) is holding its 39th Annual Pow Wow on July 27, 28, and 29, 2007 at the Autry National Center in Griffith Park, Los Angeles.  A Pow Wow is a celebration of American Indian heritage through traditional and social dances and drum competitions. It provides Indian people the chance to participate in time honored activities, teach their youth and exchange tribal traditions. It also serves as an opportunity to enhance non-Indians’ knowledge and understanding of the diversity of cultures among the Nation’s first peoples.

The three day event is the largest of its kind in Southern California and features various artisans, food booths, children’s activities as well as dance and drum competitors from many of the federally and state recognized tribes.  The doors open to the public at 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
