DCA Receives Prestigious Award from CoachArt
Each year, CoachArt honors both an indiividual and an organization that supports the CoachArt mission and has contributed to the success of the program. This year, CoachArt will honor the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. The event will take place on Thursday, October 11, 2007 from 6:30 to 10:00 pm at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. In 2006, CoachArt honored Kenneth M. Duran, Managing Partner, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.
CoachArt's mission is to improve the quality of life for underprivileged children and adolescents with life-threatening illnesses by providing free, personal lessons in the arts and athletics. CoachArt matches each patient with a volunteer coach in the child's preferred activity. This unique program offers art and recreational therapy that enhances self esteem, confidence, and hope.
For the past several years this organization has partnered with several DCA Neighborhood Art and Cultural Centers indlucing the Junior Arts Center, Watts Towers Art Center, the William Grant Still Art Center, and many of our other partnered Art Centers to allow student participation in arts programs with their peers. To insure that there is no cost to the student or the volunteer coach, CoachArt pays for all lesson materials and transportation that the child needs during the class session.
DCA is proud to work with CoachArt and its students, and is honored to receive this distinguished award.
DCA participates in American Society of Appraisers National Conference (ASA) Pat Gomez speaks about DCA's City Art Collection
On July 18th, 2007 before an audience of 150 appraisers from throughout the United States, DCA's Public Art Division Arts Manager, Pat Gomez, presented an overview of the City’s Art Collection appraisal project.
From 2001 to 2005 Gomez oversaw an appraisal of the City’s Art Collection. The collection includes an eclectic array of paintings, photography, statues, monuments and musical instruments. Highlights of the collection include the Hollyhock House Furnishings, Mayoral Portraits, Contemporary Art, and Plein Air Paintings. The collection has been amassed over the last 100 years through gifts and purchases.
The appraisal project was a major endeavor, which included a team of independent appraisers who traveled throughout the reaches of the city to view and research the works. Ultimately, values for 1,085 items were assessed. This work has greatly aided the department in managing the collection as a City asset.
The lead appraiser, Eric Voogd-Phillips, as well as appraisers Jackie Silverman, Stephen Caudana, Nancy Escher, and Nancy Martin joined Gomez in presenting the project’s inception, coordination, and challenges. The City’s appraisal project was included in the conference as a case study of a successful major municipal appraisal project.
The American Society of Appraisers includes members from throughout the United States as well as internationally. It is the preeminent professional organization for appraisers.
