The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery announces a call for artists for the gallery’s Juried Exhibition 2018. Submissions will be accepted from 11 September – 13 October 2017.
The juried exhibition has its roots in the original All-City Outdoor Arts Festivals, which were held at Barnsdall Park starting in 1953 and founded by Kenneth Ross, the visionary director of the Municipal Art Department. The All-City Outdoor Arts Festival included a rich, interdisciplinary mix of community-focused activity, craft demonstrations, music and dance performances, as well as a curated exhibition of artwork selected by a three-person jury. In 1978, gallery director Josine Ianco-Starrels re-imagined the juried show as a standalone exhibition, transforming it into an opportunity, “to select and present works by emerging professionals who had not yet attained visibility.”
The 2018 edition of the juried exhibition aims to build on the legacy of this pioneering exhibition, which has provided a platform for emerging artists in Southern California for over six decades. Artists will be selected from an open call for entries by a jury of three experts in the field: Jonathan Griffin, art critic; Jamillah James, Curator, Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Steven Nelson, Professor of African and African American Art History, UCLA.
Entries will be judged by:
–Jonathan Griffin, art critic and contributing editor for Frieze
