In an effort to support the third Council District’s continued commitment to performing arts and culture in Los Angeles, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) developed a new initiative to support Indian (Asian) performing artists in the Canoga Park area. Canoga Park has the third largest Indian (Asian) population in the state of California. Through an afternoon of music, dance, food, and cultural activities, DCA’s Performing Arts Division (PERF) presents the First Annual Holi Music and Dance Celebration.  As a continued effort, DCA is investing in Los Angeles communities by celebrating and honoring the artistic traditions of culture to bridge communities and people. DCA is committed to fostering the Council District’s growing vision of a Canoga Park Arts District.

DCA’s PERF is offering eight (8) $2,000 commissions to Indian (Asian) performing arts organizations with expertise in traditional and fusion music and dance art forms. The commission may be used for artists’ payments, costuming, and any other expenses related to the performance. Additional funding will not be provided. Applicant organizations will be responsible for creating, rehearsing, and performing fifteen (15) minutes of music or dance on the outdoor stage of Lanark Park. If awarded, organizations will be required to perform on April 22, 2023 between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Assigned performance times will be provided closer to the event. Artists will also have the opportunity to share their artistic process with an audience.  PERF will provide Sound, as well as Marley flooring. Please note commission payment will be distributed after completion of the project and may take up to four (4) months to be distributed.

Only one (1) application may be submitted per organization. Proposed performance plans must include a description of the work, number of artists involved including their roles, and the region of India that the piece embodies. All Indian (Asian) styles of performance in dance and music are welcome to apply. All work should be wholesome in nature and family friendly.

Preference is given to nonprofit organizations based in the Canoga Park area or Council District 3. To determine if your organization is within the council district boundaries please visit: https://neighborhoodinfo.lacity.org/ (link will open a new browser tab), enter your physical street address in the search field, and click on “FIND.” In your search result, you should see your City Council District number and the LA City Councilmember’s name listed under Elected Officials. Adjacent districts will be considered.
