Presented in conjunction with and support of Monumental Los Angeles, hosted by Council District 10
The Department of Cultural Affairs’ Leimert Park Cultural Hub will commission a total of six playwrights, actors, or spoken word artists to create and perform original or historical works, in theatrical observance of the 30th anniversary of the LA civil uprising, in conjunction with and support of Monumental Los Angeles, April 29 – May 4, 2022.
Actors will perform monologues, short plays, or poetry not to exceed five (5) minutes in length. Six (6) live performances will take place in Leimert Plaza Park in front of the installation, All Power to All People, at 3pm (about the time the acquittals were announced), for six (6) days, the length of the 1992 rebellion. The 28-foot-tall Afro pik, with raised fist capping the handle is a symbol of “community, strength, perseverance, comradeship, and belonging”, themes that should be expressed in the proposed theatrical work.
Each of the 6 projects (representing the 6 days of uprising), will receive an award of $2K, which consists of an artist fee and a production fee paid in two installments: the first payment will be made upon execution of the contract, and the second will be made at completion of the performance.
Submit completed applications to dcaperform@lacity.org by 11:59pm, March 11, 2022.
