About the Exhibition:
Giving offerings to our ancestors is an indigenous practice in the so-called Philippines that predates Catholocism. It is a way of honoring our ancestors & the time they spent with us on this physical plane. Once a year, many cultures around the world take the time to honor our ancestors, such as ‘Dia de los Muertos’ in Mexico, ‘Pchum Ben’ in Cambodia & many more. In Philippine culture, ‘Araw Ng Mga Patay’ (translating to Day of the Dead in Tagalog – a Philippine language) is a day we reflect on the remembrance of our passed loved ones.
The intention of this exhibition is to highlight how Filipinx-American visual artists use art as a platform to honor our loved ones in the spirit world. Visual artworks selected for this exhibition become an offering to our ancestors in itself.
Curated by Nica Aquino with assistance from Anna Calubayan.
In loving memory of Nica’s dad, Alfonso Gaerlan Aquino & good friend, Pedro Balugo, whom both passed away on September 6, 2019.
