Borderline explores the notion of the border – both as a metaphor for our lived experience and as a tool to undermine the certainty of the territories it defines. By occupying the in-between space that exists between two distinct conditions, we defiantly trespass into adjacent space, breakdown conventional barriers, and explore new territories.
An interactive, self-guided virtual tour of the exhibition will be released on Friday, January 22nd at angelsgateart.org with gallery appointments pending the guidance of local and state health orders.
The exhibition is guest curated by Los Angeles based Artist-Curators Mahsa Farhadikia, Mandy Palasik, Brandi Sjostrom, and Naomi Stewart. Borderline investigates predefined boundaries of stigmatized identity, designated space, and art medium specificity. Varying in media, including painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance, the show features works by: Janna Avner, Michael Chang, Evelyn Contreras, Christian Franzen, Richelle Gribble, Gottfried Haider, Julian Lombardi, Ariel Maldonado, Mandy Palasik, Allison Peck, Gazelle Samizay, Weng San Sit and Joshua Thomen.
The exhibition will run through March 13, 2021 and is presented through generous support from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
