In My White Tee: South Central Style

October 1 – November 19, 2022

The William Grant Still Arts Center is proud to present an exhibition celebrating the distinctive styles that have grown out of the multitude of cultures, layers and experiences of the neighborhoods of South Central, Pico-Union, South East, Watts, Inglewood, Compton and Long Beach. This exhibition brings together current and past styles as well as some historical elements contextualizing fads. We bring together wearable art, fashion based art, remixed clothing, jewelry, hats, nail art, hair art, airbrush, shoes, tattoos, photos and archives. Rather than the historic representations of the neighborhoods presenting ongoing conflicts, we bring together communal unity and harmony as well as ingenuity through presentations of ourselves and our neighborhoods. The exhibition will include installations, clothing, photography and video collected from the community through invitation and open call.

Artist include:  Sika, B+, Steve Martinez, Sincerely Ghettobird, Project KnuckleHead/Afro Unidad, Anguish.LA, Eragenarchived, Kumari Visionz, New Hood Order, and more.

This exhibition features the Fowler’s extraordinary collection of Asafo flags from Ghana. They are created by various workshops active in the region to this day and are paraded by the companies to celebrate their strength and preserve the memory of their role as community defendants.
