Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) presents our Fall 2023 Open Studios Day! Join us Saturday, December 2nd from noon to 4pm. Over 40 local artists will open their doors to the public for a peek into their art practice. The free event includes a Holiday Art Sale, Community Class demos, Family Art Workshop, Direct from the Classroom: Fall Selections art show, Teen Mural Club unveiling, Peruvian food truck Mikhuna, and artist talk in the gallery for the current exhibition, RED EARTH GAZE.

Open Studios Day is a free, all-ages event that provides the public a glimpse into the process, art, and lives of local artists who create at the Center. AGCC hosts one of the largest studio artist programs in the region with a diverse range of artistic disciplines including ceramics, photography, printmaking, writing, sculpture, videography, music, and painting. This self-guided tour of artist studios provides a unique opportunity to interact with the artists and purchase contemporary works of art. More information about the artists who create at AGCC can be found at angelsgateart.org.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS for Open Studios Day is available at angelsgateart.org/listing/open-studios-day-fall-2023/.

The Holiday Art Sale in Building H will give the public an opportunity to support local artists and the Center by purchasing creations by AGCC Studio Artists. The sale in H will take place for one day only, with additional works available for purchase directly from the artists in their studios.

Live Community Class demonstrations include: Pulse Dance, Watercolor, Music Exploration, Printmaking, Welding, Master Painting, and Raku. Pulse demonstration will be in Building H, with other demos on the lawn in front of Building D.Family Art Workshop invites participants of all ages to drop in any time during Open Studios Day to make their own print of original artworks by RED EARTH GAZE artists River Garza and Tochtlita Melissa Govea.

Direct from the Classroom: Fall Selections in Building G showcases student art by local K – 6th graders through AGCC’s Artists-in-Classrooms (AIC) program. Watercolor, poetry, sculpture and dance works represent 1,708 students taught by Artist Teachers in 61 classrooms throughout San Pedro and LA County during the fall academic term.

Teen Mural Club will unveil its second large scale public artwork on AGCC grounds. This achievement marks the second iteration of the Teen Mural Club program, a partnership with local youth and AGCC under the direction of Artist Teacher, Carlos Gacharna to design and paint a mural on the AGCC campus. From conceptualization, design, and finally painting, local teens underwent a nine-week mural making professional development workshop to create a public artwork focusing on the strength of the San Pedro community through its creativity and diversity.

An Artist Talk for RED EARTH GAZE will be held in the gallery at 2:30pm, featuring artists Jesús Jesse Gutiérrez, Laurie Steelink, Mer Young, and Gloria Gem Sánchez. Currently on view in the gallery, RED EARTH GAZE coalesces notions from the past and present as we consciously emerge into the future, celebrating the expansive hopes and dreams of Native peoples as multidimensional beings. Curated by Gloria Gem Sánchez, the multigenerational exhibition features eighteen contemporary Indigenous and Native artists. RED EARTH GAZE is on view in the gallery through December 9th, with additional information and exhibition programming available at angelsgateart.org.
