Pan-American Music Initiative Ortiz, Villa-Lobos, and The Firebird with Dudamel
:
Dudamel introduces us to Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Uirapuru—subtitled “O passarinho encantado” (The Enchanted Little Bird)—a ballet score inspired by the innumerable melodies produced by a legendary bird from the composer’s homeland, Brazil. The concert ends with Stravinsky’s huge first hit—titled for another kind of enchanted bird—The Firebird, based on folktales and folk tunes from Russia. Prize-winning Spanish violinist María Dueñas gives the first performances of outstanding Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz’ new concerto.
