So … your auntie doesn’t want to teach you how to play Spades? Your uncle doesn’t have the time? Don’t worry! We will have one table set aside for beginners, so you can finally learn with a hands-on coach! While the learning table will not have a prize, the real reward is the game you’ll have when you stand up from the table.
Players must arrive and be checked in no later than 2pm to participate for prizes. Please
allow yourself time to park. If there is space available after two, late comers can play at side tables for fun. This intergenerational moment is guaranteed to spark some of the best
convos, trash talking, and bonding. Players must be at least 13 years old to compete.

Please note: In the 1920s, “Spades” started being used as a slang term, and then a derogatory slur for a Black person. In our case, we are referring to the highest of the four suits of playing cards and the game that is played in Black households, on HBCU
campuses, and retirement homes. Spades is a rite of passage and cultural connector in
Black households, and it is played by an intergenerational cadre of gamers around the
world.
