The Trailblazing Career of Mary Louise Schmidt: How the 1936 House and Garden Exhibition Became a Launching Pad for Innovative Small Homes in Los Angeles and Reshaped the Built Environment of California

In 1936, little-known housing advocate and shrewd businesswoman Mary Louise Schmidt organized what might be the most significant architecture show of the 20th century — right here in Los Angeles. This free self-guided Trail map and research report explores the exteriors of the still-standing homes featured at the original exhibit, and tells the story of this Trailblazing woman through in-depth investigation and newly uncovered historic photographs.
