The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) advances the art of muralism unique to Los Angeles by supporting the creation and preservation of murals throughout the City. As we enter a new decade 2020, the Department seeks to commission a suite of murals reflective of this era. DCA will establish a pre-qualified roster of muralists that can honor, challenge, and propel the artform forward.
This Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is open to professional muralists and muralist teams living in the following Southern California counties: Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura. Muralists working in any medium or style may apply. Emerging and mid-career muralists, mentor-apprentice teams, and those interested in expanding their studio practice into the public sphere are encouraged to apply. Emerging and mid-career are defined as applicants with limited mural production experience but whose work displays potential for large-scale application.
An Artist Selection Panel comprised of muralists, arts professionals, and City representatives will convene to review all applications received through this RFQ and select up to forty-five (45) muralists and muralist teams to comprise DCA’s 2020 Roster of Pre-Qualified Muralists. The Roster will remain active for two (2) years from the date of selection with the potential to extend one (1) additional year. Commissions range from $5,000 – $150,000. However, muralists and muralist teams pre-qualified through this RFQ will not be guaranteed a commission.
