The Mayor-appointed Cultural Affairs Commission is an advisory board responsible for the review and approval of all architecture and artwork on, or over, City property. The Commission assists the City by final and conceptual approval in achieving great civic design and public art.

Notice to Department of Cultural Affairs Industry Professionals

If you are compensated to interact with the Department of Cultural Affairs, City law may require you to register as a lobbyist and report your activity.  Any individual may qualify as a lobbyist, regardless of occupation, education, training, or professional title.  A lobbyist may hold a position that includes but is not limited to attorney, CEO, consultant, government liaison, business owner, permit applicant, urban planners, expediters, land developers, various real estate specialists and others.

Please find enclosed a set of Project Design and Review Guidelines which proposes new standards and seeks to reinvent the way that the Cultural Affairs Commission is involved in design review and city planning and development.


What gets reviewed and why: 

The design of any public building, bridge, approach, fence, retaining wall, lamp, lamp post, or other similar structure proposed to be erected by or under the authority of the city upon any land or in any place belonging to or under the control of the city shall be adopted by any board or officer having charge, superintendence, or control of the design or construction thereof, unless such design shall have been first submitted to and approved by the Board of Cultural Affairs Commissioners by a majority vote thereof.
